MORE TH>N Business ...talks to van drivers
Giovanni Giannelli: I've got my own vehicle -- a nice white van, not the bad one, the nice one.
Matthew Taylor: How long have I been driving? About 15, 16 years.
Richard Watkinson: Obviously, I need one for the job that I do, but I... I don't really have any attraction to it!
Tony Harvey: I live in it! I'm in there probably about 40 hours.
Matthew Taylor: It can be good fun... bubbly. Or it can be a nightmare.
It's expensive being a van driver
Ivan Forman: We're at £1.20 and rising rapidly.
Robert Hill: It's disgusting!
Giovanni Giannelli: Oh yes it's too much. Much too much. It's gone up about 20p, 25p in the last year.
John Shields: It's double the price.
Matthew Taylor: I was only reading yesterday, actually, in the paper, with regards to the fact that I think two thirds of it is taxed. VAT and tax -- which is horrendous.
Any ideas for reducing fuel costs?
Ivan Forman: Well, if we're working away, and the hotel is close enough, we'll leave the vans there and just let everything come to the site and then we'll walk to the site.
John Shields: Yeah, I try to look for the cheapest, certain garages. I only use certain garages if I can.
Giovanni Giannelli: You just squeeze. You can't charge more than you already charge on coffees. Otherwise, customers think: it's too expensive, goodbye!'
Richard Watkinson: My company are trying to keep me here. Because, obviously, they can't justify spending so much money of fuel.
Giovanni Giannelli: Get an Italian donkey! Wow.
Are they cheaper than running a van?
Giovanni Giannelli: I don't know -- but I know that they kick!
