The right homeworking insurance

Even then, getting your home insurance to cover you is only part of the story. If you suffer an injury while working at home, your employer may be liable. Tarling advises home workers to "check with [your employer] that you remain covered under their employers' liability policy for any injuries you may sustain as result of your employment from home."

Of course, a home insurance policy won't cover you if you're running your own business. "Someone working full-time out of their home is likely to need a special business policy," says Tarling.

But while you should make sure that this fully covers your business equipment for loss or damage, you should also look at the other risks of being in business. A business of any size might also need:

  • Public liability insurance – which provides cover for injury or damage to third parties through your business activities.
  • Professional indemnity insurance – which protects your business from claims by unhappy customers if you've made a mistake or have failed in a professional duty.
  • Employers' liability insurance – this is a legal requirement if you have employees: don't forget that you are one if you're the director of a limited company.

Business insurance is issued by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (Reg No. 202323). All offers subject to availability. For your protection, telephone calls may be recorded or monitored.
