British Gas has launched an online assessment tool to help small business customers become more energy efficient.
The Business Energy Savers' Report aims to give small firms an action plan, along with cheap - or free - measures which they can use to cut down on the amount of energy they are using.
According British Gas Business, 97% of small firms are keen to get on top of their energy efficiency - but half are unsure how to go about it. Small businesses say the main stumbling block to achieving a more energy efficient business is cost, followed by time and the lack of information.
The online tool is designed to allow businesses to take a detailed look at their current energy use, and compare it against similar firms in the same sector.
To take part, businesses need to fill in an online questionnaire, detailing their energy sources, lighting, heating and equipment used, along with bills to work out the annual energy costs and consumption. They can then save reports, track their progress and make changes for the future.
Director of SME markets Kanat Emiroglu said small firms could make savings of up to 20% on their energy bills.
"Small businesses often lack the resources of larger organisations when it comes to analysing their energy usage and looking at ways to cut consumption," he added.
A spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses said that although energy companies had historically adopted a 'one size fits all' approach that marginalised SMEs, the tide was starting to turn, and he believed firms would welcome the new tool.
"When we ask members how environmentally-minded they are, they are increasingly keen to go green because of the money it saves," he added.
