Consumers are being encouraged to spend £5 in local shops as part of an event celebrating small businesses.
Purple Love Week runs from 14 to 22 February, and aims to inject £50 million into the economy through independent firms.
Suppliers have been encouraged to create special deals for small businesses so they can host events and offer discounts to attract local custom.
Quoting statistics from the New Economics Foundation, Purple Love Week organisers say that £5 is worth £25 when circulated in the local economy. If two million people spend £5 each, they say, the economy will receive a boost of £50 million.
The event website also allows users to recommend places to eat and shop in their local area.
A spokesperson for the organisers said: "When it first started, Purple Love Week was all about supporting local shops all over the country at the quietest time of the year by encouraging people to take part in a national tasting event.
"This year, the overall message is much starker and simpler. We all need to keep the economy moving and by spending in the local economy we're doing our bit to help."
