Adult vocational learning at record levels

Record numbers of adults gained vocational qualifications in the last academic year, according to official figures.

The Office for National Statistics found that 299,000 adults attained the full level 2 qualification - equivalent to the secondary education standard of five good GCSEs - in 2007/08, up from 72,800 five years previously.

In addition, 127,900 achieved level 3 - equivalent to two good A levels - almost twice the level from 2002/03. The number completing an apprenticeship also increased.

And the number of people beginning an apprenticeship last year was also up by 40,000 on 2006/07.

The Government claims the figures are evidence that peopleare getting the training and qualifications they need to succeed in the world of work, and that they come in the wake of what it claims is record investment in further education and skills - set to hit £4.5 billion in 2009/10.

However, the news comes against the backdrop of rising unemployment which yesterday hit its highest level in 11 years.

Skills Secretary John Denham said: "While it is good news that the number of adult learners getting vocational qualifications is at an all-time high, we must ensure that we continue to help people access the skills and training they need to get into and on at work, especially in tougher times."
