Local businesses wanted for community health drive

Small retailers are being urged to sign up to a Government health initiative centred on local communities.

The Change4Life coalition, launched yesterday by Health Secretary Alan Johnson, brings together charities, businesses and other organisations, with the aim of reducing obesity and improving fitness levels nationally through local action.

The Government fears that, if left unchecked, escalating levels of obesity will cost the NHS £50 billion by 2050.

Small retailers and other local businesses are being encouraged to join the scheme, which has the support of the Association of Convenience Stores.

"Obesity is the biggest public health challenge the country faces," Mr Johnson said. "If we don't take action now we will condemn our children to reduced life expectancy.

"Ten million people visit their corner shops every day and 36 million shop at Asda and Tesco each week," he added.

"The fact that grocers and supermarkets are on board means we can really influence what goes into our shopping trolleys."

From January, the Government plans to advertise the initiatives provided under the scheme.
