Funding pot to meet job challenges

"Innovative" employment projects will receive £27 million of European funding to help people meet the challenges of the job market and the financial crisis.

The European Social Fund pot will be used to fund up to three projects in a variety of regions around England, and the Government is now seeking proposals from organisations.

Projects, which will see cooperation with partners in other EU member states, are intended to reach out to people who find it hard to get back into work, such as single parents, older people, and the disabled.

It will see a link with employers to make sure training matches the jobs which are available, and will include training in computer skills and in green jobs.

Minister for Employment and Welfare Reform Tony McNulty said: "At a time when we are facing global economic challenges it is essential that we make sure everyone has the right skills for the vacancies which exist and that employers are looking to fill.

"This initiative will help break down barriers that prevent people achieving their potential, and tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our society.

"It will boost the support we offer to unemployed and disadvantaged people to improve their skills and return to work."

The CBI said the funding was relatively small scale, but was in tune with its response to the latest Department for Work and Pensions welfare reform green paper.

A spokesman told More Than Business News: "What is welcome about both these announcements is that they recognise the importance of linking skills with welfare to help people back into sustainable employment."
