Businesses can assess the carbon footprint of their products by using a new standard designed to help companies cut their emissions.
PAS 2050, which has been produced by BSI British Standards, The Carbon Trust and DEFRA, is designed to consistently calculate the total impact of greenhouse gases generated by goods or services throughout their lifetime. It takes into account raw materials and the manufacturing process, distribution, use and eventual disposal.
The aim is to allow businesses to make a positive effort in cutting their emissions by understanding the impact of their goods and services, so that their current products are more efficient, while ultimately developing new ones with a smaller environmental impact.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said: "By looking at where the emissions are being created and reducing them, businesses can also save themselves money.
"In addition to measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of their products, from clothing, to cosmetics and cottage pies, businesses will be able to offer advice to the public about the most environmentally friendly ways to choose, use and dispose of their products."
