New research has reported a 16% rise in the number of home-run businesses in the UK.
The annual Enterprise Nation and BT Home Business Report found that the country now has 2.5 million home businesses.
The greatest concentration of these is in London, the East and South East of England, with the fastest growth in home business start-ups happening in the North West and South East of England.
The majority of home business owners (82%) said that technology had played an important role in the start-up and growth of their business. And 52% said that they spend between £500 and £1,000 on technology each year.
Shirley Borrett, spokesperson for the Telework Association, said that the rise may reflect lifestyle choices, as well as advances in technology and the pressures of the credit crunch.
"There are probably a lot of people who are fed up with commuting - hence the large numbers in the South East - and its associated costs," she told More Than Business News.
"Thankfully there is at last greater recognition of the fact that home working and flexible working can actually be good for all kinds of businesses, through reduced costs, increased productivity and better retention of staff."
