Waitrose has announced plans to expand into the convenience store sector.
The supermarket chain, owned by John Lewis, will open its first convenience store in Trinity Square in Nottingham on the 11 December.
It aims to open three more convenience stores, ranging from 5,000 square feet to 7,000 square feet, by spring 2009.
Waitrose said the new stores will focus on specialist service counters and fresh produce, and will incorporate self-service food bars.
Alnoor Ladha of Jaspers convenience store in Nottingham said the opening will "without a doubt have a major impact" on local independent outlets.
"For those in the area, it has to have a negative impact on their livelihood and survival," he told More Than Business News. "Maybe not straight away but within two years' time."
No-one from the Association of Convenience Stores was available to comment.
