A campaign to put small business firmly on the Government agenda is gaining momentum, its organisers have claimed.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) launched the campaign - Think Smallest First - in June, posting a petition on the 10 Downing Street website and asking the Government to make small businesses central to the decision-making process.
Now 18 MPs across the three major political parties have signed the petition, which has more than 800 signatures from small business owners and members of the public.
Think Smallest First calls on the Government for a range of measures to support the smallest firms - those with less than ten employees.
These include reducing the burden of legislation to allow businesses to grow, and improving the understanding of the impact of late payment and tax increases.
The latest politician to sign up is Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South Mike Hancock, who said there was much more the Government could be doing to help businesses.
He said: "Most businesses are small and they not only employ a large number of people, but are the engine room of future growth for the country.
"We should let the undoubted entrepreneurial flair and great ingenuity of the British flourish, as not doing so will see the UK falling further behind in world competitiveness leagues."
