More people than ever have the opportunity of working from home, a study by the CBI and recruiters Pertemps has found.
The employment trends survey showed that nearly half of companies (46%) now offer staff the option to 'telework' from home - compared to just 14% two years ago.
Bosses believe homeworking is attractive to staff for a number of reasons, including reduction of their carbon footprint and reduced stress and costs associated with less commuting.
In addition, the survey, which had 513 respondents employing more than one million staff, found other forms of flexible working, such as job-sharing and term-time working, have increased in popularity.
John Cridland, CBI deputy director-general, said working from home would only become commoner as technology became more widely available and reliable.
"The boundaries of the traditional 9 to 5 in the office or on the shop floor are becoming more and more blurred," he added.
"Employers are embracing the benefits of flexible working, even as the economy heads into more uncertain times."
