The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has urged the Chancellor to reduce price pressures for retailers and restore consumer confidence, ahead of the Pre-Budget Report.
The BRC, which says retail is at the heart of every community, has written to the Chancellor Alistair Darling setting out its six-point plan to identify strategies for success.
Suggested ways to help retailers include pushing down commercial property costs, encouraging employment and improving business efficiency. The BRC wants to see these supported by a raft of measures such as scrapping Business Rate Supplements proposals, and the re-introduction of empty property relief.
Other proposals included ensuring that the minimum wage never increases faster than average earning increases.
In addition, the BRC wants the Chancellor to address low consumer confidence and high household bills by bringing in zero-VAT ratings on children's clothes and for green products. The consortium also recommends home energy efficiency as a medium-term solution to rising energy prices.
BRC director-general Stephen Robertson said: "At this difficult time for retailers and family budgets it's vital that the Government acts to restore economic stability."
