The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is calling on an influential review to support small local firms in winning public sector contracts.
The FSB has urged the Glover Review on the Role of SMEs in Public Procurement to consider Government proposals that would see SMEs win at least 30% of all public sector contracts.
The federation is trying to ensure that the smallest firms gain the most, by encouraging the Glover Review to support proposals for local authorities to hold tender briefing meetings with micro-businesses.
In addition, the group is calling for a guarantee for smaller businesses to be given a minimum of three weeks to put together a tender response.
Clive Davenport, FSB trade and industry chairman, said that the group wanted to reduce the barriers small businesses face.
"The FSB believes that with a target in place efforts can be implemented to achieving the goal, rather than discussing whether there should be one," he said.
"Small businesses offer great value to communities and by using small businesses, money is kept in the local economy."
The Government included a provision in this year's Budget to look into setting a target of 30% for SMEs winning public service contracts. The Glover Review is due to report to the Chancellor in time for the Pre-Budget Report.
