A campaign to change the perception of disabled people in society has recruited three entrepreneurs for a forthcoming TV advert.
The Creature Discomforts films have been created by Aardman Animations, the studio behind the Wallace and Gromit movies. They marry the voices of people talking about their disabilities with animals, in the manner of the classic Creature Comforts shorts.
The latest series of adverts features disabled entrepreneurs that have set up in business.
Chris Davis is visually impaired and runs the fetish-wear firm Wicked Waists in Chatham. He provides the voice for Callum the Chameleon.
"They can be quite judgemental about your disabilities," he says in the advert. "But then the number of people who've told me 'you can't do that', it really annoys me. Especially seeing as I can do it better than them sometimes."
Characters are also voiced by Debbie Reynolds, head of the School of Sign Language in Darwen, near Blackburn and Adrian Carter, who runs Carter's Home Cooking.
Both Davis and Carter have benefited from the Ready to Start scheme, overseen by Leonard Cheshire Disability and Barclays. The project aims to help 600 disabled entrepreneurs launch their own business, across 27 locations in England and Wales.
"Disabled people experience unnecessary barriers which are created largely through ignorance," commented Bryan Dutton, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s director-general. "The public's low expectations, especially of their ability to pursue education or a career, play a big part in this."
The new advert is due to be broadcast from Wednesday 9 July, and previews are available on the Creature Discomforts website.
