Over-50s who have yet to get online are being targeted by a range of events taking place today around the UK.
The taster sessions, organised for Silver Surfers' Day, introduce a number of common web activities, from blogging and online shopping to using the BBC's iPlayer.
Venues that have been volunteered for the sessions include large and small business premises, community centres, schools and libraries.
Web analyst Forrester has forecasted that by the end of 2009, around half of all over-55s in Europe will be "long-time users" of the internet.
Silver Surfers' Day comes at the end of Adult Learners' Week, and is sponsored by the communications regulator Ofcom.
"Learning teaches me to know, and to know is the greatest thing," said 2008's newly-named national Senior Learner of the Year, John McAnuff. "I have tried to learn something every day, so now that I am 72 years old … I like to think that I have learnt quite a bit!"
