Staff 'more motivated' in smaller companies

Employee enthusiasm is lower in larger companies than in small businesses, according to a report by Investors in People.

The research, carried out by YouGov, found that 39% of UK employees in organisations of 5,000 or more people claimed they were "not very" or "not at all" motivated, compared to 30% in organisations of between 50 and 250 people.

"In large companies, where there are many members of staff, it can be tempting for some to fade into the background," Phil McCabe from the Forum of Private Business (FPB) told More Than Business News. "With small firms, however, it is often a necessity that valuable employees take a greater responsibility in the day-to-day running of the business. That should be a motivating factor on its own."

The YouGov poll also found that more than four in ten (43%) employees said they were considering taking action and leaving their job within the next 12 months, citing unreasonable workload (18%), feeling underpaid (18%) and the lack of a clear career path (17%) among their top reasons for wanting to quit.

Some 44% of employees claimed their organisation failed to support their career development beyond an initial induction period and 28% that they felt unsupported by their managers.

"It is important not only to have a sound business strategy in place, and to make sure staff are fully informed about it, but also to correctly manage the growth of an employee from the very start," McCabe advised.
