New self-assessment tax return 'easier to complete'
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has launched a new self-assessment tax return form that it claims is easier to complete.
The form is the result of a two-year pilot with 70,000 people, and is the first major re-vamp since 1997. HMRC claims that it has fewer questions, simpler language and an improved layout, as well as a shorter self-employment section for businesses with an annual turnover below £64,000.
The deadline for submission of the new paper form has been brought forward in the year to 31 October. Those completing the online version will have until 31 January 2009 to file their return.
