Baggage backlog at Heathrow

Thousands of bags are still stuck at Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 after three days of cancellations.

Behind-the-scenes photographs shown to the BBC showed luggage in large heaps.

British Airways (BA), which has exclusive use of the terminal, today stopped 67 of the scheduled 330 flights. The airline said it would operate all longhaul flights from the terminal as planned over the weekend.

BA said 37 flights are likely to cancelled on Sunday while the backlog is cleared.

The pictures come after mounting criticism from furious business and leisure passengers.

The troubled fifth terminal formally opened on Thursday, but problems with the baggage handling system arose immediately and operations have been hampered ever since.

A total of 208 flights in and out of the terminal have been cancelled over its first three days of operation.

British Airways has set up a helpline (0800 727800) and is advising all Terminal 5 passengers to check arrivals and departures information before setting off.
