Campaign to ban Alistair Darling from pubs

Alistair Darling faces being barred from pubs across the country by landlords frustrated by increased duty on alcohol in the latest budget.

James Hughes, who runs the Utopia Bar in Edinburgh, started the protest by putting up posters warning the chancellor that he is not welcome. It read: "Barred. We hereby give notice that Alastair [sic] Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is barred from this pub until further notice."

Mr Darling increased duty on a pint of beer by 4p, put 14p on a bottle of wine, 55p on spirits and ruled alcohol duty will go up by two per cent above the rate of inflation for four years.

"The trade thinks the increases are a cheap PR stunt to show the Government is trying to tackle binge drinking," Hughes told The Mirror.

A support group for the campaign on Facebook has now attracted more than 1,000 members.

Campaigners say the chancellor has failed to recognise that "well-run community pubs are the solution to Britain's binge drinking problems".
