Earthquake: insurance 'should cover damage'

Businesses and homeowners have been reassured that earthquake damage is generally covered by insurance policies, after the biggest quake in the UK for over 20 years.

The tremor measured 5.2 on the Richter Scale and was centred just north of Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. The effects were noticed across England and Wales, with widespread reports of damage to roofs and chimneys across the North East of England.

A man suffered a broken pelvis after being trapped underneath falling masonry in his attic bedroom in Wombwell near Barnsley. As yet there have been no other reports of significant injuries.

Today's quake is the most powerful to have been recorded in the UK since 1984, when an event measuring 5.4% hit the Lleyn Peninsula in Wales.

The Association of British Insurers has said that damage to homes or businesses from earthquakes will normally be covered by insurance. Customers wishing to take advice or make a claim have been urged to contact their insurance provider.

MORE THAN BUSINESS customers who have been affected by the earthquake should call 0800 072 0227.
