Green-fingered start ups show strongest rise
Gardening and horticultural services were the fastest growing types of new business in the three months to October, a new survey suggests.
The latest Barclays Local Business survey, which examined trends in the number of new businesses across England and Wales, found that there were 16% more 'green-fingered' start ups in the third quarter of 2007 than there had been in the same period the previous year.
The rise was sharpest in the East Midlands, where there was twice the amount of start-up activity, and in the South East and East, where numbers went up by 50%.
John Davis, marketing director for local business at Barclays, put the trend down to a combination of the British love of gardening and increased pressure on leisure time.
"It is unsurprising... that a growing number of enterprising people are leveraging their knowledge in this field and looking to combine their favourite pastime whilst capitalising on the current trends brought about by a time-poor society," he said.
The construction trade posted the second strongest rise in start ups, with numbers up 14% on the previous year. Barclays reports that the sector has seen growth throughout 2007.
