Hauliers 'in the dark' over London's Low Emission Zone
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has hit out at Transport for London (TfL) over its handling of a new emissions charging scheme.
The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is due to come into force in the centre of London in February 2008. The first phase will affect all diesel-engined lorries over 12 tonnes, with those over 3.5 tonnes coming under the scheme from the following July, along with buses and coaches.
Under the new rules, lorries that do not comply with minimum emissions standards will incur a £200 charge for travelling within the zone.
The FSB said it was "constantly receiving calls from hauliers asking us for details of the scheme". It has warned TfL that unless it publicises the measures better, the scheme risks being viewed "as a stealth tax rather than an attempt to tackle pollution in the capital".
No comment was available on Monday from Transport for London.
