Winning start ups revealed

A children's sport coaching company came away with the top prize at the Startups Awards 2007 last night.

Sportstars, NatWest Startups Business of the Year, was founded in Cardiff in 2005 by young entrepreneur James Taylor. James set out "with the simple objective of spreading the benefits and pleasures of sport to as many people as possible".

The judging panel praised the company as "ahead of the game and forward-thinking, investing in staff and infrastructure as a springboard for growth." .

The Online Business of the Year award went to The Book Depository, set up by Andrew Crawford, a former employee of Amazon. Judges said that he had identified a gap in the market and "executed his business plan with aplomb", feeling that he "simply couldn’t have succeeded sourcing and selling globally so prolifically, and within just three years, without such intelligent use of the internet".

Among the full list of winners, the Product of the Year award went to Switch Sticks, a range of colourful contemporary walking sticks, while The Local Food Company was voted Green Business of the Year for its commitment to sustainable practices in Devon.
