New businesses 'head to internet for advice'
New small firms look for advice over the internet first, according to a report launched as part of Small Business Week 2007.
The findings are based on a survey of 1,650 small businesses across the UK, and are contained in the State of the Small Business Nation Report, published by BT Business.
The report found that while start ups tended go online first, home-based firms and growing businesses were more likely to seek initial advice from private organisations, such as accountants and lawyers.
The survey also asked firms about the impact of technology, the quality of business support, and the barriers to growing their business. Among the barriers, finance, tax and VAT came up most frequently (58% of respondents), with running costs (54%) and finding time to plan for expansion (43%) the next most cited issues.
