EU considers 'blue card' for skilled workers
The European Commission is to unveil plans for a 'blue card' for workers, BBC News reports.
The permit, similar to the US Green Card, would allow skilled workers from outside the EU to live and work with their families in member states.
Current rules mean that the UK, Ireland and Denmark could opt out if the scheme goes ahead, but other members will have to take part.
Potential card holders would need a recognised qualification, a minimum of three years' experience, and the offer of a job that could not be fulfilled by an EU citizen.
A commission statement reads: "To maintain and improve economic growth in the EU, it is essential for Europe to become a magnet for the highly skilled.
"To do so, the EU must present a united front, rather than emphasise the different immigration policies of each member state."
